This project was inspired by the effects of spina bifida - a spinal defect that many people are born with and are therefore disabled for life. For a few months my parents were told i had spina bifida and was likely to be born unable to walk. Luckily i was born without this condition, but was intrigued to research more into its history.
By looking at x-rays and experimenting with many different mixed materials i came up with this cast aluminium piece. I cast a torso of a spine being twisted under pressure in plaster and then made a wax cast of the form that the spine took. This is the beginning of the piece, it has yet to be modified to fit to the body and achieve the required shocking effect that i wish to portray.
